{"id":286,"date":"2018-09-25T13:33:37","date_gmt":"2018-09-25T13:33:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/isquaredemo.com\/MLT\/threegraceslegal\/university-students-accused-of-cyber-crime\/"},"modified":"2025-11-07T12:39:24","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T12:39:24","slug":"university-students-accused-of-cyber-crime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/isquaredemo.com\/MLT\/threegraceslegal\/news\/university-students-accused-of-cyber-crime\/","title":{"rendered":"UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ACCUSED OF CYBER CRIME"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/isquaredemo.com\/MLT\/threegraceslegal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/cybercrime_cyber_criminal.jpg\" alt=\"University students labelled cyber criminals\" title=\"university students labelled cyber criminals \"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a recent security report, which analysed 850 cyber-crimes against UK universities and colleges from 2017 to 2018, there was clear evidence to show that the cyber-attacks were often committed by disgruntled students or staff members within these organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report was conducted by the government-funded agency, <em>Jisc, <\/em>who discovered that the crimes were not being committed by professional hackers or organized crime groups, but instead the perpetrators were much closer to home.&nbsp; This conclusion was made due to the attacks showing \u201cclear patterns\u201d of activity during term times, whilst attacks were reduced during holiday periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr John Chapman, the head of security operations at Jisc, who assists with providing technology services to the higher and further education field, stated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u201cthere is evidence to suggest that students and staff may well be responsible for many of the DDos (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks we see.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In one of Jisc\u2019s investigations they found what appeared to be a four-day cyber-attack on a university, discovering that the source of the attack originated from an online gamer living in the university\u2019s halls of residence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The discovery of the individual hacker is a rare find, as Dr John Chapman admits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u201cIt\u2019s notoriously difficult to identify individual cyber-criminals\u201d.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although, Jisc and other cybersecurity agencies work to the best of their ability to discover the origins of the cyber-attacks, in order to protect organisations from financial and reputable catastrophe and loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Here at Three Graces Legal, we can assist your organisation with all aspects of cybersecurity. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Please contact us on <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>0151 659 1070<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a recent security report, which analysed 850 cyber-crimes against UK universities and colleges from 2017 to 2018, there was clear evidence to show that the cyber-attacks were often committed by disgruntled students or staff members within these organisations.
